Alberta’s heating season is longer than most Canadians realise. In an average year, Edmonton and Calgary furnaces start cycling in mid-September and don’t fully stop until late May — roughly eight months of the year. That makes the six weeks before the first hard frost the highest-leverage time to work on your house. Every dollar of natural gas you avoid burning in October you also avoid burning in January, February and March.
This is a practical, ordered checklist: what to do yourself, what to pay a technician for, and what each item is realistically worth on an Alberta bill. Work top to bottom — the list is sequenced by payback, not by difficulty.
Start with your gas bill, not your furnace
Before you spend a weekend caulking, understand what you’re actually paying for. An Alberta natural gas bill has two halves: the commodity (the gas itself, which a competitive retailer like Get Energy sells you) and the delivery and rider charges set by your distribution utility, which nobody can discount. Weatherization reduces the volume of gas you burn, so it shrinks the commodity charge and the variable portion of delivery — but the fixed daily delivery charge stays put no matter how tight your house is.
That’s why the two levers work together. Tighten the envelope and make sure you aren’t overpaying per gigajoule. The furnace: five things before September
1. Replace the filter — then set a reminder
A clogged filter is the single most common cause of a furnace short-cycling or tripping its high-limit switch on a cold night. Standard 1-inch pleated filters need changing every 60–90 days during heating season; 4- and 5-inch media filters run 6–12 months. If you live near active construction or gravel roads — common in Fort McMurray, Airdrie and newer Calgary suburbs — halve those intervals. Cost: $15–$40. Effect: restored airflow, lower blower runtime, and a furnace that’s far less likely to fail mid-January.
2. Book the annual service call now, not in November
Alberta HVAC companies are booked solid the first week temperatures drop below −15 °C. A tune-up in late August or early September typically runs $120–$200 and includes cleaning the burners and flame sensor, checking the heat exchanger, verifying gas pressure and testing the inducer motor. The heat-exchanger inspection matters most: a cracked exchanger is a carbon monoxide risk, and it’s the one item a homeowner genuinely cannot assess.
3. Test the CO alarms and the furnace safety shutoff
Every level of a home with a gas appliance should have a working carbon monoxide alarm, and CO sensors expire — most units are rated for 7–10 years and have a manufacture date printed on the back. Check it. Replace anything older than a decade.
4. Clear the intake and exhaust vents
High-efficiency condensing furnaces vent through the side wall with two PVC pipes. Snow drifts, wasp nests and dryer lint all block them, and a blocked intake will shut the furnace down as designed. Note where those pipes exit now, while you can see the ground, and plan to clear them after each big snowfall.
5. Balance the registers and check the ductwork
Open all supply registers — closing vents in unused rooms raises static pressure and makes the whole system less efficient, the opposite of the folk wisdom. Then look at accessible duct joints in the basement or crawlspace and seal gaps with foil-backed mastic tape (not cloth duct tape, which dries out and peels). Leaky ducts in an unheated space can waste 10–20% of the heat your furnace produces.
The envelope: where the money actually is
Air leakage, not insulation R-value, is the biggest fixable loss in most Alberta homes built before 2000. Ranked by cost-to-benefit:
Attic hatch and top-plate leaks
Warm air escapes upward. An uninsulated, unweatherstripped attic access hatch is effectively a small open window all winter. Build a foam box over it, add weatherstripping and a latch, and you’ve fixed one of the largest single leaks in the house for under $75.
Rim joist and basement header
The band of framing where the floor meets the foundation wall is a classic Alberta cold spot. Rigid foam cut to fit each bay and sealed with spray foam around the edges is a half-day job for a handy homeowner, and it noticeably warms basement floors above.
Windows and doors
Replace failed weatherstripping and door sweeps before you consider replacing windows — new triple-pane glazing is a comfort and resale upgrade with a long payback, while $30 of V-strip on an old exterior door pays back in a single season. If you can slide a business card under a closed door, that’s your first project.
Electrical and plumbing penetrations
Bathroom fans, pot lights, plumbing stacks and wiring holes in top plates leak air into the attic continuously. Sealing them with acoustical sealant or fire-rated foam is tedious but cheap, and it also stops the ice-damming and attic frost that show up on Alberta roofs every February.
Attic insulation top-up
Alberta’s current new-build target is roughly R-60 in the attic. Homes from the 1970s and 1980s often sit at R-20 to R-30. Blowing in another 8–12 inches of cellulose or fibreglass typically costs $1,800–$3,500 for an average bungalow — the biggest-ticket item on this list, and the one to do after air sealing, because insulation does not stop air movement.
Controls: get paid for doing nothing
A programmable or smart thermostat is the cheapest recurring saving available. Setting back 3–4 °C for the eight hours you’re asleep and the eight you’re at work cuts heating runtime meaningfully without any comfort penalty you’ll notice. One caveat specific to heat pumps and in-floor hydronic systems: deep setbacks can backfire, because those systems recover slowly. Water heating, the forgotten 20%
Domestic hot water is usually the second-largest gas load in an Alberta home. Three quick wins: set the tank to 60 °C (hot enough to control bacteria, not scalding), insulate the first two metres of hot-water pipe leaving the tank, and drain a few litres from the tank valve annually to flush sediment — Alberta’s hard water builds scale fast, and scale sits directly between the burner and the water it’s meant to heat.
A realistic two-weekend plan
Weekend one (indoors, under $150)
- New furnace filter; write the change date on the frame
- Test and date-check every smoke and CO alarm
- Weatherstrip exterior doors, add door sweeps
- Seal accessible duct joints with foil mastic tape
- Program the thermostat setbacks
- Turn the water heater down to 60 °C and insulate the outlet pipe
Weekend two (envelope, $150–$400)
- Insulate and weatherstrip the attic hatch
- Foam and seal the rim joist bays you can reach
- Caulk exterior penetrations: hose bibs, dryer vent, gas line entry, cable and electrical service
- Seal top-plate and pot-light penetrations from the attic side
- Clean gutters and check for missing shingles before snow load arrives
