It Started Around a Kitchen Table

Get Energy wasn't started in a boardroom or by a group of investors. It started around our kitchen table in Fort McMurray.

Back in 2014, Malcolm Setter was working as a journeyman electrician in Alberta's oil industry while he and his wife, Jennelle, were investing in real estate. Like many Albertans, they were frustrated every month when their utility bills arrived. There were only a handful of independent energy retailers, very little local competition, and it felt like customers had very few choices or people they could actually call for help.

One day, while complaining about another power bill, a friend looked at Malcolm and said:

"Why don't you just start your own utility company?"

That simple comment changed everything.

The more they looked into Alberta's deregulated energy market, the more they believed customers deserved something different. They deserved a local company that answered the phone, explained their bills in plain language, recommended what was genuinely best for them, and treated people the way they would want to be treated themselves.

So that's exactly what they set out to build.

One Customer at a Time

Get Energy's first office was the Setter family home in Fort McMurray.

The company started slowly — meeting customers around their kitchen tables, reviewing their utility bills, explaining how Alberta's energy market worked, and showing them how they could save money.

There were no fancy sales presentations or aggressive sales tactics — just honest conversations and a genuine desire to help.

As the business grew, so did the team. Friends joined along the way, helping build the customer-first culture that still exists today. While some of those early team members have moved on to new opportunities, they were an important part of Get Energy's journey. Today, Grace and Jimmy continue that tradition, providing the same friendly, knowledgeable service customers have come to expect.

Surviving the Fort McMurray Wildfire

In 2016, everything changed.

The Fort McMurray wildfire devastated the community. Many of Get Energy's customers lost their homes, and with them, many of the utility accounts the company had worked so hard to build.

Like many local businesses, Get Energy suddenly faced tremendous uncertainty.

Rather than focusing on what was lost, the team focused on helping wherever they could. As Fort McMurray rebuilt, so did Get Energy. Customer referrals became the foundation of the company's growth, and to this day, word of mouth remains the biggest source of new business.

There is no greater compliment than when someone trusts Get Energy enough to recommend it to their family and friends.

More Than Just Electricity

What began as an electricity retailer has continued to evolve. Today, Get Energy works with homeowners, businesses, farms, condominium corporations, and industrial customers across Alberta.

One of the areas Get Energy is most passionate about is renewable energy. The company helps customers maximize the return on investment from solar installations and other microgeneration projects. More recently, Get Energy has also begun working with combined heat and power (CHP) systems, helping customers reduce their operating costs while generating clean, efficient energy.

Giving Back to the Community

Being local means more than just having an office in Fort McMurray. Over the years, Get Energy has proudly supported local hockey teams, soccer clubs, dance organizations, pickleball events, schools, churches, and community organizations.

One of the company's favourite traditions is the annual Christmas Utility Giveaway. Every year, customers nominate families who could use a helping hand, and Get Energy provides several months of free utilities to those who need it most. It's one of the most rewarding things the company does, and a small way to give back to the community that has supported it since day one.

Malcolm & Jennelle Setter

Although Malcolm spends much of his time working with commercial customers, renewable energy projects, and larger energy strategies, he still enjoys helping someone save a few dollars a month on their apartment power bill.

Outside of work, Malcolm and Jennelle are raising their four boys in Fort McMurray. Faith and family are at the centre of everything they do.

One of the things Malcolm is most proud of isn't any particular project or milestone — it's that after more than a decade in business, customers still know they can call or email him directly if they need help. That's something he never wants to change.
