Short answer: as of August 20, 2026 the Utilities Consumer Advocate lists 72 competitive energy retailers serving Alberta, plus five default suppliers that provide the Rate of Last Resort. Any Alberta home can buy electricity from any of the 72, regardless of address. Your wires company — ATCO Electric, FortisAlberta, EPCOR or ENMAX — does not change when you switch. Retailers, wires companies and the UCA: who does what
Three different kinds of organization show up on an Alberta power bill, and confusing them is the most common reason people think they cannot switch.
- Competitive retailers sell you the energy and send you the bill. You choose this one. There are 72 of them right now, and any of them can serve any address in the province.
- Wires companies (distributors) own the poles, wires and meters and physically deliver the power. You do not choose this one; it is assigned by your address. In Alberta the four large electricity distributors are ATCO Electric, FortisAlberta, EPCOR and ENMAX, alongside several municipal utilities and rural electrification associations. On the gas side, ATCO Gas and Apex Utilities. Their charges are set by the Alberta Utilities Commission and are identical no matter which retailer bills you.
- The Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) is the provincial body that maintains the official retailer directory, publishes rate comparisons, and helps consumers with complaints. It does not sell energy.
Because delivery charges are fixed by regulation, switching retailers changes the energy rate and the retailer’s own fees. It does not change your reliability, your meter, or who restores power in an outage.
What a default supplier is
If you have never signed an energy contract, you are with a default supplier on the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR), which replaced the Regulated Rate Option on January 1, 2025. The RoLR is currently 12.01 to 12.06¢/kWh and is fixed from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026. The five default suppliers, again assigned by address rather than chosen, are:

Not every company on this list markets to residential customers, and some serve niches: solar-focused retailers, charity-linked billing, co-ops, and commercial-only offerings. A few brands are operated by the same parent as a default supplier. The directory is the source of truth on who is currently licensed to retail energy in Alberta; the UCA updates it as companies enter and leave the market, so check it rather than an old copy of this page.
How to evaluate any retailer on the list
Five things decide what you actually pay. Headline rate is only one of them.

| Rate type | Fixed locks a price for the term. Variable floats with the AESO wholesale market monthly. Neither is universally better; see fixed vs variable. |
| Administration fee | A flat monthly charge that has nothing to do with usage. It varies widely between retailers and quietly changes the real cost of a low headline rate. Ours is $9.97 per month. Read more on admin fees. |
| Transaction or energy fees | Some retailers add a per-unit fee on top of the quoted rate. Ours is 0.70¢/kWh on electricity and $0.50/GJ on gas. Ask what the all-in number is. |
| Term and exit fee | Contracts run one to five years. Ask what it costs to leave early, in dollars, before you sign. Variable products usually have no exit penalty; fixed ones often do. |
| Contact quality | Call the support line before you sign. If you cannot reach a person in a few minutes when they want your business, that is useful information about what happens when you have a billing problem. |
Two more practical points. First, a “discount off the regulated rate” pitch is meaningless now that the Rate of Last Resort is frozen at a high level — compare cents per kilowatt-hour against other competitive offers instead. Second, if you generate your own power, ask specifically about the solar export credit, because that number varies enormously between retailers.

How switching actually works
Switching is administrative. No one visits your home, nothing is disconnected, and your meter and wires company stay the same. You sign up with the new retailer, they handle the transfer with your distributor, and the change usually takes effect on your next billing cycle. The Utilities Consumer Advocate notes a retailer switch can take 10 to 90 calendar days to complete. Alberta consumer protection rules give you a cooling-off period after signing a contract. One caution: check your current contract for an exit fee before switching away from a fixed term. Leaving a fixed contract early can cost more than a year of savings.

What should I compare when choosing a retailer?
Rate type (fixed or variable), the monthly administration fee, any per-unit transaction fee, the contract term and its exit fee, and how easy the retailer is to reach by phone. The administration fee is the item most people forget, and it can outweigh a lower headline rate.
