If you live anywhere between Calgary and Edmonton, you already know the sound: a summer sky that goes green, then a five-minute barrage that shreds siding, dents vehicles and turns a garden into salad. Alberta sits in the middle of Canada’s most active hail corridor, and the single most common question we hear from homeowners weighing a solar array is a fair one — what happens to solar panels in a hailstorm, and who pays if they break?

The short answer: modern panels are far tougher than most people assume, the real risk is concentrated in a handful of severe events, and your existing home insurance policy usually covers a roof-mounted system — but only if you handle a few details correctly. Here’s the full picture for Alberta.

How much hail risk are we actually talking about?

Alberta’s “Hailstorm Alley” runs roughly from High River through Calgary, Airdrie, Red Deer and up toward Edmonton. The Insurance Bureau of Canada has repeatedly ranked Alberta hail among the country’s costliest natural catastrophes — the August 2024 Calgary hailstorm alone produced well over $2 billion in insured damage, making it one of the most expensive severe-weather events in Canadian history.

But “expensive” is not the same as “frequent at your address.” Most of that cost comes from vehicles, siding and asphalt shingles across a dense urban footprint. Severe hail — stones large enough to threaten tempered glass — hits any given property rarely. The rational way to think about it is the same way you think about your roof: a low-probability, high-cost event that you insure against rather than avoid.

Why panels handle hail better than your shingles

A solar module is not a window. The front sheet is 3.2 mm tempered glass bonded to a rigid laminate and framed in aluminium, and it is mounted at an angle so most stones strike a glancing blow rather than a direct hit. Panels sold in Canada are tested to the IEC 61215 standard, which includes an impact sequence using 25 mm ice balls fired at roughly 23 metres per second at multiple points across the module. Many premium modules are certified to larger stone sizes on top of that.

Translated: pea- to nickel-sized hail is a non-event. Golf-ball hail driven at a steep angle is where breakage starts to appear, and even then damage is usually patchy — a few modules in an array rather than the whole roof.

The damage you can’t see

The failure mode that actually matters in Alberta is not shattered glass. It’s microcracking: hairline fractures in the silicon cells under intact glass. The panel looks perfect, keeps producing, and quietly loses output over the following seasons as cracks propagate through thermal cycling — and we have plenty of thermal cycling.

This is the single best argument for monitoring. If your inverter reports per-string or per-panel output, a post-storm dip of 5–10% on one string is a data point you can take to an adjuster. Does home insurance cover solar panels in Alberta?

In most cases, yes. Roof-mounted panels are generally treated as part of the dwelling under a standard Alberta homeowner’s policy, so hail damage falls under the same peril coverage as your shingles — subject to your deductible. Ground-mounted arrays are frequently treated as a detached structure or “other structures,” which is a different (often smaller) sub-limit.

That “generally” is doing real work, though. Four things trip people up:

  • You never told your insurer. Adding $25,000–$40,000 of equipment to your roof changes the replacement cost of your home. Most Alberta insurers want to be notified; some require it in writing. An unreported system is the easiest claim denial there is.
  • Your dwelling limit didn’t move. If your home is insured to rebuild for $500,000 and you add a solar array, the rebuild figure is now higher. Ask for the limit to be updated, not just a note on the file.
  • Roof settlement is on actual cash value. A growing number of Alberta policies depreciate roof surfacing after a certain age. Check whether that clause reaches your solar equipment or stops at the shingles.
  • Hail deductibles can be separate. In high-risk postal codes some insurers apply a distinct wind/hail deductible, sometimes a percentage of the dwelling limit rather than a flat dollar figure.

What to ask your broker, word for word

  1. Is my roof-mounted solar system insured as part of the dwelling, and has my dwelling limit been increased to reflect it?
  2. Is my hail deductible the same as my standard deductible, or separate?
  3. Is roof and equipment settlement replacement cost, or actual cash value after depreciation?
  4. Does the policy cover lost production or only physical repair?
  5. If a panel model is discontinued, will you pay to replace with a comparable current model?

Question 5 matters more than it sounds. Panel model numbers turn over every few years. A partial array replacement in year eight almost always means mismatched modules, and you want the insurer on record about how they handle it before you need the answer.

Warranty vs. insurance: two different doors

Homeowners routinely confuse these. A manufacturer’s product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship — it does not cover a rock falling from the sky. The performance warranty guarantees an output curve over 25 years, and it also excludes storm damage. Hail is an insurance event, full stop. The one place warranty comes back into play is if a panel fails abnormally early after a minor storm, which can indicate a manufacturing weakness. What a hail claim looks like, step by step

  1. Photograph everything before cleanup — the array from the ground with a zoom, the dented downspouts and siding, hail on the deck next to a ruler or a coin for scale. Scale photos of the stones are the most persuasive evidence in the file.
  2. Screenshot your production data for the days before and after. Then check it again at two weeks and eight weeks; microcrack losses show up late.
  3. Do not climb on the roof. Wet, hail-scoured shingles with glass fragments are how people get hurt. Let the installer or adjuster do it.
  4. Report promptly. Most policies require notice “as soon as reasonably possible,” and after a big storm the adjuster queue fills fast.
  5. Get your installer’s assessment in writing, including an electroluminescence (EL) test if microcracking is suspected. EL imaging is the only way to prove cracks under unbroken glass, and it is what turns a “looks fine to me” adjuster note into a paid claim.
  6. Isolate broken modules. A shattered panel is an electrical hazard and a fire risk. Have the array shut down or the affected string isolated by a qualified electrician until repair.

Reducing your risk before the storm

You can’t move out of Hailstorm Alley, but you can stack the odds:

  • Buy on glass and certification, not just price. Ask for the module’s hail test rating — several tier-one manufacturers certify to 35 mm or larger stones. On a typical residential install the premium for a tougher module is measured in cents per watt, against a system that runs around $2.80 per watt installed through our partner installers. That’s cheap insurance against a deductible.
  • Steeper is safer. Alberta’s optimal production tilt already puts most roof arrays at an angle that deflects hail. Low-slope and ground-mount installations take more direct hits — some ground-mount racking can be tilted steeply for storm season.
  • Mind the clamps. Wind, not ice, causes more Alberta solar damage than people expect. Proper rail spacing and torque specs matter; this is one of the questions on our installer selection checklist.
  • Insist on monitoring you can actually read. Data is your claim evidence.
  • Keep the array clean and inspected. An annual look-over catches seal degradation and frame corrosion that a storm would otherwise turn into a bigger loss — see our notes on solar maintenance and cleaning and snow removal.

Skip the aftermarket hail screens and mesh covers. They shade cells, trap debris and snow, void some warranties, and the mounting hardware creates new roof penetrations. Certified glass is the better engineering answer.

The economics still work — that’s the point

Hail risk is a reason to insure properly, not a reason to skip solar. An Alberta system only pays back if it produces value every month, and a large share of that value comes from what you’re paid for the power you export.

That’s where your retailer matters as much as your hardware. Will hail void my solar warranty?

No — but the warranty won’t pay for hail damage either. Storm damage is an insurance matter. The warranty continues to cover defects and performance on undamaged modules.

Should I buy separate solar insurance?
