Alberta gets around 2,300 hours of bright sunshine a year — more than almost anywhere else in Canada — but it also gets blowing dust from gravel roads, spring pollen, canola season, wildfire smoke residue, and four to five months of snow. All of that lands on your solar array. The question every Alberta solar owner eventually asks is simple: does cleaning the panels actually recover enough production to be worth the effort, and should you be climbing up there to shovel snow off in January?
Here is the practical answer, based on how solar behaves in this climate.
How much production do dirty panels actually cost you?
Soiling losses on residential rooftop arrays in a prairie climate typically run 1–4% annually. In a dry summer with no rain for three or four weeks, an array can drift toward 5–7% below its clean baseline before the next rainfall resets it. That is real, but it is small: on a 10 kW system producing roughly 12,000 kWh a year, a 3% soiling loss is about 360 kWh — worth roughly $50–$70 depending on your rate and micro-generation credit.
Snow is a different story. Snow does not reduce output slightly; it stops it. A fully covered panel produces essentially nothing. Across a typical Alberta winter, snow cover costs most residential arrays somewhere between 3% and 10% of annual production, concentrated in December and January — the months when your array was already producing the least because the sun sits low and days are eight hours long.
Why December losses matter less than they feel like they should
An Alberta array produces roughly 10–12% of its annual energy in November, December and January combined. June alone can beat all three. So losing half of December’s output feels dramatic but costs a fraction of what losing two clear weeks in June would. This is the single most useful thing to internalize before you buy a roof rake: the highest-value cleaning you will ever do is a spring wash, not a winter shovel.
When to clean, and when to leave it alone
Spring (late April–May): the one cleaning that pays
After the melt, panels carry a film of winter grit, road dust, and organic residue. Washing then — right before the highest-production months — recovers the most kilowatt-hours per hour of effort. If you clean once a year, clean now.
Mid-summer (July–August): only if it has been dry
Check after three or more weeks without meaningful rain, or after a heavy pollen or wildfire smoke period. If your monitoring app shows clear-sky peak output drifting 4–5% below where it sat in June, a rinse is justified.
Fall (October): optional but worthwhile
A clean panel sheds snow better than a dirty one, so a late-October wash slightly improves winter self-clearing. It is a nice-to-have, not a necessity.
Winter: usually leave it
Panels are dark glass mounted at an angle. On a sunny day at -5°C, the glass warms above freezing, the bottom layer of snow melts, and the sheet slides off in one go. Most Alberta arrays self-clear within a few days of any snowfall, especially at pitches of 25 degrees or more.
How to clean solar panels safely
- Do it from the ground. A telescoping pole with a soft-bristle brush or squeegee head reaches most bungalow and two-storey rooflines. Nobody should be on a wet roof for a 3% production gain.
- Cool glass only. Early morning or evening. Cold water on 60°C glass in July risks thermal stress and micro-cracking.
- Water and, if needed, a drop of dish soap. No pressure washers — high-pressure water can force moisture past the frame seals and void your panel warranty. No abrasive pads, no ammonia or solvent cleaners, no metal scrapers.
- Rinse, then squeegee. Hard water in much of Alberta leaves mineral spotting if you let it air-dry. Deionized water, if you have it, is ideal.
- Never walk on the modules. Standing on glass causes micro-cracks that show up years later as degraded strings, and it is the fastest way to lose a warranty claim.
Snow removal: if you’re going to do it, do it right
There are cases where clearing is reasonable — a low-pitch array (under 15 degrees), a north-shaded roof that never warms, an ice-crusted sheet that has sat for two weeks in a cold snap, or a ground mount you can reach standing up.
- Use a roof rake with a foam or rubber blade, never a metal snow shovel or ice scraper.
- Pull down the slope — never sideways across the modules, and never lever against the frames.
- Clear the bottom third first. Exposing the lower edge lets sunlight warm the glass, and the rest often releases on its own within hours.
- Don’t chase the last inch. A thin translucent layer still passes usable light, and scraping to bare glass is where damage happens.
- Watch what comes down. A released snow sheet from a two-storey roof is a genuine hazard to people, pets, vehicles and gas meters below.
If your array is on a steep or icy roof, the honest answer is to skip it. The kilowatt-hours are not worth an ER visit, and no reputable installer will tell you otherwise.
Partial shading: the reason a little snow can cost a lot
Solar modules within a string behave somewhat like a chain. On a system with a single string inverter, one heavily snow-covered panel can drag down the output of every panel wired with it. Systems using microinverters or DC optimizers isolate each module, so a covered panel only costs you that panel. Use your monitoring app instead of guessing
You do not need to eyeball your roof to know whether cleaning is due. Compare clear-sky midday peak output to the same period earlier in the season. A stable 4–6% gap on comparable sunny days points to soiling. A sudden drop to near-zero on one string points to snow, shading, or a fault worth reporting. Sustained year-over-year decline of more than about 0.5–0.8% is normal panel degradation, not dirt — and it is what your panel performance warranty is there to cover.
What this looks like across the province
Homes in Calgary benefit from chinooks that clear snow repeatedly through the winter, so winter losses tend to be at the low end. Edmonton and central Alberta hold snow longer and see slightly higher winter losses. Acreages and rural properties near gravel roads — common around Red Deer — see the highest dust soiling and get the most out of an annual summer rinse.
A realistic annual routine
- April/May: full wash from the ground. The one that matters.
- July/August: check monitoring; rinse if output has drifted after a dry stretch.
- October: optional pre-winter wash.
- Winter: monitor only; clear the lower edge if snow has sat more than about two weeks and you can reach it safely from the ground.
- Anytime: visual check for cracked glass, lifted flashing, chewed wiring, or bird nests under the array — those cost far more than dirt.

Cleaning protects a few percent of your output. The rate you are credited for exports affects all of it.
