The Quick Formula
Here’s the simple way to estimate:
- Find your annual electricity usage (from your bills — in kWh)
- Divide by 1,300 (average kWh produced per kW of solar in Alberta)
- That gives you the system size in kW
- Divide by the wattage of your chosen panels (typically 0.4 kW for a 400W panel)
- That’s your panel count
Example: 7,200 kWh/year ÷ 1,300 = 5.5 kW system ÷ 0.4 kW per panel = 14 panels

Step 1: Check Your Electricity Usage
The most important input is your actual electricity consumption. You can find this by:
- Checking your bills: Add up the kWh from your last 12 monthly bills
- Online portal: Most utilities provide annual usage summaries online
- Quick estimate: The average Alberta home uses about 600 kWh/month or 7,200 kWh/year
Step 2: Decide How Much to Offset
You don’t have to cover 100% of your usage with solar. Common approaches:
- 100% offset: Size your system to match your annual usage. You’ll export surplus in summer and import in winter, but it nets out.
- 80% offset: More conservative — lower upfront cost, still great savings. This is often the sweet spot for ROI.
- 100% offset: Oversize slightly to ensure you’re a net exporter. Makes sense if your retailer pays well for exports — like Get Energy’s Solar Club at 35.00¢/kWh.
Step 3: Factor in Alberta’s Solar Production
Alberta’s solar production varies by location and season:
- Southern Alberta (Lethbridge, Medicine Hat): ~1,400 kWh per kW installed per year
- Central Alberta (Calgary, Red Deer): ~1,300 kWh per kW per year
- Northern Alberta (Edmonton, Fort McMurray): ~1,200 kWh per kW per year
These are annual averages. Summer months produce 4-5x more than winter months.
Step 4: Check Your Roof Space
Each standard 400W solar panel is approximately 18 sq ft (roughly 3.5 × 5.5 feet). You need:
- 10 panels: ~180 sq ft of usable roof space
- 15 panels: ~270 sq ft
- 20 panels: ~360 sq ft
- 25 panels: ~450 sq ft
Remember: not all roof space is usable. Subtract areas around vents, chimneys, skylights, and edges. A good installer will do a precise roof assessment.
Real-World Sizing Examples
Example 1: Starter Home in Edmonton
- 1,200 sq ft bungalow, 2 occupants
- Annual usage: 5,400 kWh
- Target: 100% offset
- System: 5,400 ÷ 1,200 = 4.5 kW → 12 panels (4.8 kW)
- Estimated cost: $13,000-$16,000
Example 2: Family Home in Calgary
- 2,000 sq ft two-storey, 4 occupants
- Annual usage: 8,400 kWh
- Target: 100% offset
- System: 8,400 ÷ 1,300 = 6.5 kW → 17 panels (6.8 kW)
- Estimated cost: $17,000-$21,000
Example 3: Large Home with EV in Red Deer
- 3,000 sq ft home, EV charging, 5 occupants
- Annual usage: 14,000 kWh
- Target: 100% offset (maximize exports on Solar Club)
- System: 14,000 × 1.2 ÷ 1,300 = 12.9 kW → 33 panels (13.2 kW)
- Estimated cost: $28,000-$35,000
Should You Oversize Your System?
If you’re on a plan that pays well for exports, oversizing makes financial sense. With Get Energy’s Solar Club HI rate at 35.00¢/kWh, every extra kWh you export earns you money. On a standard retailer paying 7¢/kWh, oversizing doesn’t pay off as well.
What About Future Usage?
Consider sizing for where your usage is going, not just where it is today:
- Electric vehicle: Adds 3,000-5,000 kWh/year to your usage
- Heat pump: Could add 2,000-4,000 kWh/year (but reduces gas costs)
- Home additions: More space = more energy use
- Working from home: Adds 500-1,000 kWh/year
It’s usually cheaper to add panels during initial installation than to add them later.
